What is Blood Pressure?

When you visit the doctor, you'll often hear your blood pressure number, and whether that's good or bad, but you don't really learn about the boundaries and limits of it all. The biggest question most people have is about the difference between Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure readings. Systolic is the higher number, and diastolic is a lower number. Systolic pressure measures when the heart is contracted, while diastolic is taken just before it contracts.

What is Considered "Normal" Blood Pressure?

What is normal and what is too high? It all comes down to what pressure normal for your body type, compared to what pressure an average healthy person has.

When the heart muscle contracts, it produces pressure of blood upon the walls of the vessels, this is your blood pressure.

A normal blood pressure occurs when everything is working properly, and the heart isn't exerting excess energy. When you produce adequate (but not excessive) blood pressure, that is a normal, healthy state.

What is “High” Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is the sign of your heart working too hard. Though most symptoms are myths, as its mostly a symptomless condition (a silent killer). If you wait for symptoms, you're only a ticking clock; check your blood pressure often, and never skip an annual physical.
