Visceral adiposity, also known as central obesity, is one of the many aliments linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
According to an article in FoodConsumer, a new study published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements now suggests that taking dietary supplement L-arginine could help reduce abdominal obesity. This study, led by Dr. Ryan T. Hurt from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, has shown that L-arginine works to reduce central obesity in non-diabetic individuals, much like the early studies that showed the reduction of visceral obesity and fat mass in animals.
About the study
The study was conducted on 20 obese females between the ages of 18 and 40, with body masses between 30kg/m2 and 40 kg/m2, and a waist circumference larger than 89 centimeters.
During the study, the women were directed to take three grams of L-arginine, three times per day for 12 weeks. In addition to the supplement, the participants were also advised on making healthy lifestyle changes.
At the 12 week mark, both waist circumference and body weight decreased, and this conclusion was made: “L-arginine may be effective at reducing central adiposity in obese patients.”
