Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that affects an estimated 5.2 million Americans. A disease that takes the brains of our loved ones, we've been long searching for answers to prevent this disease.

Below is a video from the Alzheimer’s Association that outlines some of the most frightening facts and figures about the disease:

Since the release of this video, there have been some developments in finding a breakthrough to possibly treat and even reverse the disease. According to an article published on April 15, 2015 in the Journal ofNeuroscience, “new research not only points to a new potential cause of Alzheimer’s but also may eventually lead to a new treatment strategy.” And this might just involve arginine consumption and the way it’s processed in the brain.

During the study, scientists tested a group of special mice called CVD-AD that were developed to have immune systems close to a human immune system. With these mice, scientists were able to imitate the onset of Alzheimer’s, studying their brains throughout the process. Their focus was largely on how the disease begins.

One finding of the study was that an enzyme that breaks down arginine was present in the regions of the brain that involved memory.
